Abstract/Contents: | "In some instances, applications of Bayleton (triadimefon) may result in changes in color of treated turf stands (usually darker green). Bayleton is known to have plant growth regulating properties similar to other triazole derivative growth retardants, for example paclobutrazol (PP 333, ICI America). Individual leaves become dark green or blue green, and may appear to be thicker than untreated leaves. The darker green color may be the result of the shortening of the leaf due to growth inhibition. Stunted leaves have cells that are smaller and more compactly arranged, which means that chloroplasts within cells are packed closer together. More green wavelength light is reflected than passes through the leaf, which causes an intensification of the green color. The increased green color could also be due to an actual increase in the chlorophyll content of leaves, but I have little evidence for plant cells, although I have heard from a Mobay scientist that Bayleton may in some cases cause a doubling of the leaf mesophyll layer. However, I have not witnessed this latter phenomenon myself. Changes in color of treated arefas (e.g. Poa species fairways) may be the result of conditions other than a change in leaf color. Changes in leaf angle and increased plant densities can also cause an increase in verdure. Also, correction of a disease problem with Bayleton applications may improve turf color if the pathogen had induced a yellowing of the foliage. After all, Bayleton is a fungicide! |
