Abstract/Contents:	Addresses the recent trend towards building golf courses located in residential communities. Discusses the importance of creating an identity for the golf course community. Describes the identity created at the Bridges at Rancho Santa Fe in San Diego which is the converted former residence of Bing Crosby "who in 1932 commissioned California mission revival-style architect Lilian Rice to restore an original adobe ranch house dating from the days of Spanish rule." States that "yet, today's successful golf community requires more than creation of an identity...when it comes to golf course communities, one of the most important factors is not the market, but the cost of financing, especially in areas with strong home markets." Also addresses the effect of increasing environmental regulations on golf course development. States that "the regulatory climate has become a strong market factor as developers have turned to selling the environmental distinctiveness of their projects." Concludes that "the best courses tended to be stand-alone courses until architects were given the freedom to create superior designs that happened to have homes around them."
