Abstract/Contents: | Turf species used for testing were Bermudagrass (Cynodon spp.) and St. Augustinegrass (Stenotaphrum secundatum). Spring root decline occurred for 3 consecutive years. It was associated with very low winter temperatures, and rapid rate of spring green-up and shoot growth. During the next 2 years, 1980 and 1981, spring root decline did not occur. The winters were mild and the rate of spring green-up and shoot growth were very slow. In 1982, spring root decline was again observed. Winter temperatures were extremely cold followed by early spring green up, although in this case, shoot growth was slow. More research on the extremes and duration of winter soil temperatures, plus the rate of temperature change during late winter and early spring is currently underway. A second series of observations was taken to determine the response of 10 warm season perennial grass species to spring root decline. Observed were Common, Tifway, and Tifgreen bermudagrasses; Floratam and Texas Common St. Augustinegrass; Meyer zoysiagrass; Common centipedegrass; Pensacola bahiagrass; Adalayd; and Texoka buffalograss. Observation results were basically the same as previousy observed for bermudagrasses and St. Augustinegrass. Spring root decline was observed in 7 of the 10 species. Observations suggest that spring root decline is common to most of the warm season perennial grasses used for turfgrass purposes, given that the prerequisite winter low temperature stresses and subsequent rate of spring green up has occurred. All testing was done at the TAMU turfgrass rhizotron. Charts are included. |
