Abstract/Contents: | As part of a continuing six year study of shade adaptability of twelve tall fescue cultivars under humid conditions, third year (1981) results are reported. Testing was performed under a mature stand of oak trees at Texas A&M University. To ensure proper drainage a two inch layer of sand was applied on the native Lufkin fine sandy loam. Fumigation with methyl bromide preceded planting by 24 hours. Seeding was done on April 14, 1979. Mowing height is maintained at two inches. Water is applied to prevent visible wilt. The plot receives 1/2 lb per M per growing month of nitrogen from October to April. Other nutrients and pesticides are only used as required. After 3 years, Falcon (NJ-78) and Rebel (T-5) were the top ranked cultivars, because of better summer growth characteristics. Also ranking high were Kentucky 31, Kenwall, and Galway. Intermediate rankings were given to Kenmont, Kenhy, Fawn, and Monoco, with Clemfine, Alta, and Goar exhibiting poorer adaptability. A table details the comparative monthly turfgrass quality for the 1981 season of the 12 cultivars. |
