Abstract/Contents:"A five-year trial at the Limburgerhof Agricultural Research Station of BASF confirmed the long-lasting effects of three slow-release nitrogen fertilizers. With each of these the three rates applied each gave progressive improvement in sward color and growth during the three months of observation each year. These improvements were particularly evident under wear. IBDU releases N most evenly and makes it available to plants in suitable form. IBDU, in its two applications per year, gave the best color, and sufficient growth for intensive use. SCU was similar, tending even to give more growth than IBDU (over the year as a whole) but color was worse. Moreover, five years' use of this fertilizer, with its sulphur coating, caused a fall in soil pH and adversely affected the establishment of seed sown after the trial ended. In terms of color and growth UF was the poorest of the three fertilizers in the trial. Also it gave much less response under the wear treatment than SCU and IBDU. The unsatisfactory performance of UF is connected with its composition. The relatively high amount of hot-water-insoluble N is, as this trial showed, not available in practice. UF does not provide the required plant nutrition during the growth period. Nor was there any evidence of a carryover or of a cumulative effect of UF during the course of the trial."
