Abstract/Contents:Describes a study conducted at the University of Guelph, Ontario, "to identify outstanding turfgrass genotypes for improved N [nitrogen] uptake and thereby decreasing leaching potential on putting greens." Results indicate that "bentgrasses had a great N uptake than annual bluegrasses. Most of the variability found in total N uptake was attributable to the greater above ground biomass of bentgrasses compared to annual bluegrasses." Concludes that "no NH4+ leaching loss was detected under all grasses studied" and "breeding programs could be used to improve the grass root morphology since a significant heritability was found in the rooting characteristics of turfgrass."
