Abstract/Contents:Start with a trip to your local county extension office and have your soil analyzed (soil test). Your soil test will determine your balance of nutrients. The key is being sure the plant has the proper amounts of 13 essential nutrients in the soil. These are: Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium, Sulfur, Iron, Manganese, Boron, Zinc, Copper, Molybdenum, and Chlorine. Three nutrients have to be closely monitored: Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium. Let's look briefly at these three nutrients and their importance to one another. 1) Nitrogen encourages rapid leaf growth. 2) Phosphorus is essential for the establishment of plants. 3) Potassium acts like a vitamin or stimulant to plants. There are 5 steps generally helpful in determining your problem: 1) Inspect, 2) Identify, 3) Study life cycle, 4) Choose proper control, and 5) Apply.
