Abstract/Contents:Soil tests of greens show that turf with Black Layer is different from normal turf in that it has higher metal ion concentrations (especially manganese, zinc, and iron) and lower available phosphorus concentrations. Problems of Black layer were most prevalent on courses where phosphorus applications have been minimized in order to control poa seeding. Lists management practices which lead to the high metal and low phosphorus condition, the conditions they lead to and the results on the turf.
