Abstract/Contents:A new system for evaluation of turfgrasses is presented. The original visual component assessment used a scale from one to nine, with nine being the best. Using the original system as a guide, the new system for evaluation uses five single observations and presents those observations numerically. The five observations are: (1) density, (2) uniformity, (3) surface smoothness, (4) color, and (5) texture. Each of the observations is ranked numerically, on either a three-point or one-point scale. This new system allows for faster evaluations of turf plots. Observations were made on forty-three properly maintained tall fescue expervars. 29.5% of the tall fescue expervars planted had high quality ratings. Density ratings were consistently higher than the other four ratings, and surface smoothness fluctuated more than any other factor. Color of leaf was also easier to rate than with the previous system. This new system proved excellent in refining evaluation procedures, and obtained a better rating of tall fescue.
