Abstract/Contents:Describes four signs of compaction including traffic patterns in the turf, slow water infiltration, weeds associated with compacted turf, and a soil sample showing compaction. Discusses deep-tine aeration to relieve compaction. Defines thatch as "a layer of undecomposed plant material between the soil surface and the green surface, which limits the exchange of air and moisture between the soil and the atmosphere" and biomass as "the accumulation of organic matter in the upper portion of the soil profile." Briefly mentions micro-organisms, stating that "they may assist in controlling biomass and thatch."
