| Abstract/Contents: | "From 1975 to 1979 the German Turf Society carried out its third experiment involving the application of fertilizer to turf on six different sites. Altogether 27 different fertilizers were tested. The fertilizer was applied three times a year, i.e. in June, July, and rather late in October, altogether 15 g/m2 every year. During this experiment there was no particular caustic damage. All in all, the fertilizer influenced the colour and the density of the sward favourably. The percentage of weeds was reduced through the application of fertilizer. When fertilizer containing herbicides was applied in addition, the weed percentage was even lower. The fertilizer also had a considerable influence on thatching in turf. It is assumed that it is related to the physiological reaction of the fertilizer in the soil. When fertilizer was applied, the proportion of Festuca rubra, Poa pratensis and Agrostis tenuis changed in the long run. It was obvious, that the amount of fertilizer applied later in the year, in October, was insufficient to bridge the low vitality level of the grasses in spring until the date when the first fertilizer was applied in June." An earlier fertilizer application, such as in early April, is therefore recommended. |
