Abstract/Contents:"Subsurface irrigation refers to underground operation of drip irrigation systems. Subsurface irrigation of bermudagrass (Cynodon sp.) turf growing in a sand soil was compared with conventional overhead irrigation in two experiments. The subsurface irrigation lines were spaced at 46 cm and were placed 10 cm deep. In the first study, equal amounts of irrigation water were supplied with point source and line source subsurface irrigation systems, and with an overhead system. In the second study, line source subsurface irrigation systems were used to provide 100% and 133% of that supplied by the overhead system. In both studies significantly higher visual ratings and greater clipping weights were obtained with the overhead irrigation system. Turfgrass appearance and growth were reduced and bands of wilted turf were observed between subsurface irrigation lines. This study does not indicate that quality turf can be grown with less water by using subsurface irrigation."
