Abstract/Contents:"Surfactants were applied to four turfgrass varieties grown either in soil or in solution culture. Application rates for each of four products were less than, the same as, and more than manufacturers' recommendations. The surfactants had no measurable effect on either the growth of three bentgrass varieties maintained as putting freen turf in the field or Kentucky bluegrass grown in soil culture in the greenhouse. However, when surfactants were used to reduce surface tension of solution culture media, highly significant reductions in foliar yields resulted. The greatest yield reduction occurred with the lowest surface tension. Chemical analysis of foliage revealed significant changes in mineral content. As the surface tension was reduced, phosphorus, copper, and zinc increased in concentration in foliage, while potassium and manganese decreased. Soil apparently modified surfactants, either chemically or microbiologically, and prevented measurable injury to turf.
