Abstract/Contents:States that "modern agriculture is largely dependent upon the maintenance of a favorable equilibrium between losses and gains of available plant nutrient elements in soils. Erosion, cropping, leaching, and volatilization are the four principal pathways whereby nutrient elements are removed from soils." Describes methods and conditions of sampling runoff and the importance of soil organic matter. Discusses nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and sulfur losses. Discuses how to interpret data on nutrient loss through runoff. Concludes that "there is a need for further fundamental studies of the physicochemical properties of soils in order fully to understand and to evaluate the true nature of erosion damage."
