| Abstract/Contents: | Provides a brief history of tall fescue in the United States. Outlines the production and utilization of tall fescue species and describes its adaptation and palatability. States that "the most uniform stands have resulted when tall fescue is planted on well-prepared firm seedbeds." Further discusses the establishment and fertilization of tall fescue as well as tall fescue's genetics and cytology. Profiles several specific varieties of tall fescue, including Alta, Kentucky 31, Goar, and Ottawa 39. Describes the breeding behavior of tall fescue, its genetic variability and seed production. Profiles fescue poisoning and states that "diseases on this crop have not been particularly serious." Concludes that future varieties of tall fescue "will have a higher degree of palatability and be more nutritious sand more aceptable to the animal, so aiding the livestock man in more efficient production of milk, beef, and mutton." |
