Abstract/Contents:"Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.), like most temperate C3 grasses, contains fructans as the major storage form of carbohydrate in vegetative tissues. This layer chromatography (TLC) shows two pools of fructans, differing in mean degree of polymerization (DP), in both mature leaf blades and in regions of cell division and expansion in emerging leaf blades. The low DP pool comigrates with inulins, and two trisacharides are found with mobilities equal to those of 1-kestose and neokestose. The high DP pool is believed to be levan but a 6-kestos-like trisaccharide, thought necessary for levan synthesis, has yet to be found. Structure of the low and high DP pools are now being investigated using methylataion techniques and C13-NMR. Fructans of low DP are probably acting partially as osmotica as they contribute about 0.2 MPa to the total osmotic potential. High DP fructans are known to act largely as storage carbohydrates. Advantages or disadvantages of inulin type as osmotica compared with levan type of fructan are unknown. Supported by USDA/CRGO grant 86-CRCR-1-1970."
