Abstract/Contents:"Tests were made, on a site prone to desiccation, to examine various pure seeds and mixtures of Festuca rubra, Festuca ovina, Agrostis tenuis and Poa pratensis as to their suitability for landscape management measures. The soil had been treated beforehand for this purpose. It had been ploughed and the plant cover had been sprayed with a total weedkiller, upon which it was superficially rotary-tilled. Three maintenance measures followed upon that (clipping once a year, the clipped material being removed, mulching and leaving the plants to develop uninfluenced). The findings can be summarised as follows: When the soil was ploughed, the varieties and mixtures sown showed higher population proportions than in cases where total herbicides and superficial tillage were applied. In cases where the plants were left uninfluenced in their development, the population proportions of the varieties sown amounted, on an average, to 71%, whereas when the grass was clipped once a year, with the clipped grass being removed, and when mulching was applied, the percentages were 63 and 49, respectively. On an uneven landscape the mulching equipment causes injuries to the sward. Festuca rubra ssp. commutata, F. ovian and partly also the three mixtures, reach population proportions of more than 70%, when clipped once a year, with the clipped grass being removed, and when the plant development is left uninfluenced. The grass population, when a total weedkiller and superficial rotary tillage had been applied, was 65 cm high, i.e. it was 6 cm higher than it was, when the soil was ploughed. The maintenance measures influence the average height of the grass population only when it is individually sown. The grass population on the experimental plot which was ploughed shows more bare spots than the experimental plots which were chemically treated and rotary tilled. There is a tendency towards a slight increase of bare spots when the plot is less intensely maintained."
