Abstract/Contents:"The breeding of turf grasses, in which eight private breeding firms are engaged at present, began about 1920. Every year, the institute for the Testing of Varieties of Cultivated Plants at Wageningen (I.V.R.O.) issues an index of varieties. This index not only gives a clear idea of the present level of breeding but recommends, at the same time, starting from different varieties, seed mixtures for sports grounds, turfs, slopes etc. The number of species, recommended for one mixture has, however, declined in the course of time. Smooth meadow grass, perennial rye-grass and the fescue species are of greater importance. Special attention is paid, these days, to the breeding of oekotypes, in addition to the breeding of mutations and polyploids. Attention is also drawn to questions relating to the protection of varieties and to significant characteristics as far as the judging of homogeneity, perseverance and independence is concerned."
