Abstract/Contents: | Describes the steps the USGA has taken (and plans to take) in regulating equipment for play. Explains that "the underlying philosophy is to assure that skill - not technology - remains the dominant factor in playing golf." Discusses the techniques developed by the USGA to test equipment in an attempt to determine if it is compliant with the Rules of Golf. Explains that "the issue that continues to generate more discussion than any other topic regarding technology and the game of golf is the distance elite players hit the golf ball." Describes steps that the USGA has taken (in conjunction with the R&A) "to rein in any further increases in distance." Describes the commission of research "to learn as much as possible about the ball and its performance characteristics: size, weight, materials, construction, dimple design, impact dynamics, aerodynamics, and moment of inertia." Explains that this research would be used to regulate golf ball technology. |
