Abstract/Contents:Reviewed the elements necessary for successful irrigation programs according to the type of turfgrass facility. Water need determination covered methods including evaporation pans, evapotranspiration calculations, use of tensiometers and soil probes and proper observation of grass appearance. Increasing the efficiency of irrigation water includes the methods of grading all areas to give a uniform surface, deep subsoiling (relief of compaction mechanically), intelligent use of wetting agents, hollow-tied aerification and slicing, deep solid tined aerification (vertidrain), the use of soil or sand for rocky area coverage and thatch control. Particular requirements for a better designed irrigation system included slow precipitation rate systems, individual head control, smaller heads for increased efficiency, fewer heads per valve and new concepts in putting green and fairway approach irrigation. Noted was the need for the maintenance practices at aerification, wetting agents and thatch control to better able one to maintain optimum conditions. Also, to allow for proper aerification, all irrigation and drain lines should be installed at a depth of at least 20 inches.
