Abstract/Contents:The article reports the second year's results from using sewage sludge for improving soil, and when mixed with sand, for forming rootzones. The following aspects were examined: turf appearance, turf color, sward density, wear tolerance, botanical composition, turf growth and uptake of nitrogen, formation of turf mat, amount of roots, and leaching of nutrients. Sludge, when used for soil improvement, still had an outstanding effect in the second trial year. In artificial rootzones with sand the effect of sludge, when compared with that of peat enriched with nutrients, depended on the origin of the sludge, as it also did in the sowing year. Older sludge with a higher nitrogen content clearly improved the main turf qualities. Less mature sludge, however, gave the same results in 1975 as the nutrient-enriched peats. On the whole the nutritive effect of the peats declined in 1975, whereas the long-term effect of the sludge continued. Nutrient losses by leaching were particularly obvious in nutrient-enriched peat in the year of sowing. Sixteen versions of soil/sludge/sand combinations were devised and tested. The reasons for the differences in the turf quality that these plots produced are related to infestation of poa annua, as well as fungal diseases and difficulties with water retention.
