Abstract/Contents:Reviews the concepts most often associated with water quality including total salt content, sodium hazard, toxic ion levels, bicarbonate and pH. Salt concentration tends to limit root growth, water and nutrient uptake and was shown to increase toxicities. Salinity, measured in ppm or electrical conductivity, also proved to be a limiting factor in turf growth above certain levels for certain species (as demonstrated in a table listing both warm- and cool-season grasses). Sodium concentration excessive in water proved to reduce soil aeration and water infiltration in the soil. The relative permeability, Sodium Absorption Ratio (SAR), was demonstrated and shown to reduce permeability when the SAR is too high. Trace ions also proved to be problematic to turfgrasses and ground covers especially when accumulating to toxic or near toxic levels. Bicarbonate (HCO3) was shown to affect soil permeability. Hydrogen activity of pH poses problems to trurfgrasses when outside the desirable range of 5.5 to 7.0. Discussion indicates that water quality, soil quality, turf species and irrigation management work together for quality turf. Practices and ideas pertaining to improving water quality in each case were listed and explained.
