Abstract/Contents:Studied the principles of overseeding through experimentation and reported the results. Seedling-plant interaction was studied from three standpoints including sod seeding (planting seed into a stand of existing turf), simultaneous seeding (competing species sown on a sterile seedbed adjacent to one another) and spaced planting (different species sown spaced apart to determine growth potential). Each test ran for 6 weeks and was confined to Kentucky bluegrass, Perennial ryegrass, and annual bluegrass. Perennial rye proved to be the easiest to overseed and was followed in competitive ability by annual bluegrass and finally Kentucky bluegrass. The species of the soil into which seeds were planted was generally unimportant. Anything to disturb the soil in the seedbed will be beneficial (i.e. dethatching). Finally, choosing the best variety and seed lot is important as is the season of planting. Recommendations were given for each of the Northwest U.S. states for Kentucky bluegrass and ryegrass selection.
