Title:Long-Term 2,4-D Use Doesn't Harm Soil
Source:MVTA. June/July 1987, p. 2.
Keywords:TIC Keywords: 2,4-D; Soil fertility; Safety
Abstract/Contents:"A long-term study by Agriculture Canada scientists has shown that continued use of 2,4-D has no adverse effect on the microbial processes essential to soil fertility. The Canadian scientists found the chemical had no effect on microbial biomass or the rate of nitrogen mineralization. And that was after 35 annual applications of 2,4-D! The herbicide did cause some depression of soil enzyme activities and increased the soil respiration. But all depressive and stimulatory effects were relatively small and most were rather short-lived -- especially when compared to changes in soil mirobial activities caused by such natural stresses as flooding, drought, freezing and thawing."
