Abstract/Contents:Discusses the use of nitrogen fertilization in the late fall. States that "of the three macro nutrients, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium used predominantly in the fertilization of turfgrasses, nitrogen is the element whose application results in the most rapid response in the grasses." Describes a four-year study conducted in Rhode Island to determine the response "of turfgrasses to late fall applications of soluble nitrogen fertilizers." Results indicate "a treatment of 2 lbs. soluble nitrogen per 1000 sq. ft. made about the time of the last mowing in the fall or slightly before appears to be optimum." Concludes that "the concept that fall applied nitrogen reduces the winter hardiness of plans has not been substantiated with respect to the turfgrasses in Rhode Island."
