Abstract/Contents:Details the process of developing a message map for risk communication. Defines a message map as "a roadmap for displaying detailed, organized responses to anticipated questions or concerns." States that "developing and using message maps achieves several important risk-communicating goals by: 1) identifying stakeholders early on in the communication process; 2) anticipating stakeholder questions and concerns before they are raised; 3) developing key messages and supporting information within a clear, concise and accessible framework; 4) ensuring the organization has a central repository of accurate, timely and consistent messages; and 5) encouraging the organization to speak with one voice." Lists seven steps involved in creating a message map. Also lists possible stakeholders in an environmental health crisis, including victims; victims families; directly affected individuals; local, provincial, and national public-health personnel; law-enforcement personnel; government agencies; media; health agency employees; scientific community; and the general public. Concludes that "message maps are a viable tool for risk communications. They ensure risk information has the optimum chance of being heard, understood and remembered. More importantly, they encourage agencies and organizations to develop a consistent set of messages and speak with one voice."
