Abstract/Contents:Growth retardants were tested in experiments with different turfgrass cultivars over four years. With certain reservations, carbetamide, ethofumesate, glyphosate and several new substances proved effective in inhibiting the growth of ornamental lawn grasses. Carbetamide inhibited growth for 8-10 weeks; this may be too long for ornamental lawns, if they are to be intensively managed again. Ethofumesate inhibited the growth of all the typical turfgrasses, with the exception of Lolium perenne. Ethofumesate, however, was not as uniform in its effect as carbetamide. These two herbicides occasionally caused slight discolorations, but this depended on weather conditions and the species and cultivar of grass. Glyphosate (as 0.5 litre/ha "Roundup") gave very uniform inhibition of turfgrass growth. If any slight discoloration occurred, it was concealed within a week by the good green color of new, but still inhibited growth. When glyphosate is used, the rate is very critical: a double dose from overlapping may destroy Poa pratensis. A few new materials produced by Ciba-Geigy were also tested and gave good prospects of growth control of ornamental lawn grasses without discoloration. Some of these new substances were in granular form, which may be particularly valuable for ensuring even application of growth retardants on small irregularly shaped areas.
