Abstract/Contents:Discusses preventative maintenance for irrigation systems. Details maintenance programs for each component of a system, including irrigation sprinklers, valves, and field controllers; grounding items; wire and wire splices; computers and software; pipe; lateral and mainline pipe isolation valves; air release valves; and pump stations. States that "it should make perfect sense that with complex machinery, devices and irrigation equipment in the unprotected environment of a golf course - equipment with a cost of over a hundred times more than an automobile - a preventitive maintenance program should be in place." Also discusses possible benefits of using a preventative maintenance program, stating that "a good program of preventative maintenance will help you and your staff minimize: water and electrical costs, emergency repair costs, pipe failures, labour and the costs of alternative watering if your system fails. Preventative maintenance results in improved playing conditions, less ground-under-repair, better and more efficient sprinkler performance, fewer wet and dry spots, fewer customer complaints, healthier and more beautiful turfgrass and a more efficient use of your resources - both staff and financial."
