Abstract/Contents:In these experiments, lasting two years, the herbicide glyphosate was tested to study its effect as a growth retardant. A dose of 0.5 litre/ha of the proprietary product "Roundup", containing glyphosate, gave satisfactory inhibition of grass growth, with a slight discoloration after treatment, which disappeared quickly. "Roundup" at 1.0 litre/ha checked dicotyledonous species also, but caused hardly any change in color. Higher rates increased the number of gaps in the sward. A dose of 1.0 litre/ha "Roundup" destroyed Poa species: the consequent gaps in the sward were closed during the growing period by the spread of neighbouring grasses. A mecoprop preparation added to 0.5 litre/ha "Roundup" also checked the growth of dicotyledonous species but discolored them very badly. Maleic hydrazide, used for comparison, caused only slight discoloration, provided the grasses were less than 10 cm high when the retardant was applied. If it was applied to grass 15 to 20 cm high, it caused considerably greater discoloration than glyphosate. Mixtures of maleic hydrazide or dalapon with glyphosate showed no advantages, but only caused more and longer-lasting discoloration, and irreparable gaps in the sward. Tests with new products from Ciba-Geigy seem to indicate that preparations will be available in future to inhibit effectively the growth of grass along highways, on slopes and on waste land, without spoiling the outward appearance and especially the color of these "low maintenance" areas.
