Abstract/Contents:Switzerland has very diverse topography, geology and climate. Extremely low and extremely high altitudes are found quite close together and the climate is in some places continental, in others oceanic. The vegetation reflects this wide range of different conditions. Natural turf is still found above the tree line. Man-made turf has, during the past twenty years, become an important factor in garden and landscape design. There is no government backing for the development of turf for ornamental purposes, nor is there any turfgrass breeding in Switzerland. Nevertheless, everything new of this sort is immediately tested by private concerns. Switzerland has contributed to the development of some special kinds of turf, such as turf for low maintenance areas (e.g. on roadsides), lawns for roofgardens, and golf courses at high altitudes.
