Abstract/Contents: | "Cultivar treatments as part of the 2000 National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP) Kentucky bluegrass test were evaluated near Amherst, MA. The trial consisted of 173 commercially available and experimental cultivars seeded to 3 ft x 6 ft plots in Oct 2000. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with three replications. All plots received 2.5 lb N/1000 sq ft (0.75 lb N in late May and early Sep, 1.0 lb N in late Nov), no irrigation or fungicides, and were mowed at 1.25 in. Early snowfall (late December 2002) and continuous snow cover (snowmelt 22 Mar 2003) were favorable for snow mold disease. Plots were rated for Typhula blight (gray snow mold) 28 Mar 2003. Above average spring rainfall followed by an extended dry periods in midsummer were also favorable for necrotic ring spot. Plots were rated for necrotic ring spot 30 Jul 2003. Identity of both diseases were confirmed by the University of Massachusetts Turfgrass Disease Diagnosis Laboratory. Typhula blight and necrotic ring spot were evaluated using visual ratings recorded as percent of plot. Significant difference among cultivars were detected. Twenty-nine cultivars showed excellent resistance to 0. korrae (no symptoms). None of the cultivars evaluated for Typhula blight was disease-free, however, ten cultivars had only trace amounts of disease (<3% Typhula blight). Cultivars 'Bedazzled' and the experimental 'A93-200' showed excellent resistance to both diseases in 2003. No correlation between resistance to Typhula blight and necrotic ring spot was detected (r=0.05) among cultivars suggesting the need for blending two or three cultivars for maximum broad-spectrum control." |
