Abstract/Contents: | "Intergreen" is an international organization specializing in the construction of grass pitches according to uniform systems. They have a laboratory in Bern to make routine soil tests as well as for research and development on sports field construction. Advice to clients and training of maintenance staff are given high priority. "Intergreen" has two basic systems for grass pitch construction, which are nevertheless adaptable to individual projects. The preparation of the ground and the design of the separate parts of the system, as well as the choice of construction material, are adjusted to the soil and climate of the site. With "Intergreen" pitches the most important elements in the system are the sub-soil, the main drainage, the subsidiary drains, (consisting of slits in the ground filled with small stones) and the rootzone. The planning and construction of pitches conform to the standards "Intergreen" set for themselves. The best layout of the site, and its physical and chemical characteristics, are the subjects of field and laboratory studies. Construction is undertaken with special machinery which is at the disposal of every "Intergreen" member. The rootzone material is made up in situ or with mixing equipment at the side of the pitch. "Intergreen" pitches are characterized by the following technical and economic advantages: 1) Laboratory and field studies, to ensure smooth progress before, during and after the construction work. 2) Quick construction through complete mechanization. 3) Adaptation of basic systems to local soil and climate. 4) High efficiency and economical construction costs through using standard designs, appropriately modified, for the drainage systems and the rootzone." |
