Abstract/Contents:"Results were different in the two years possibly because of the different soil types. The first trial was on a peat soil with lower fertility than the mineral soil at the 1985-6 site. In 1984-5, chemical control of a large spring population of leatherjackets on nitrogen free plots produced a significant and vary profitable response but returns diminished with increased levels of nitrogen. In 1985-6, the control of much small leatherjacket numbers had no significant effect on yield where no nitrogen was applied. However when combined with extra nitrogen, significant responses occurred, reflecting the better inherent potential of the pasture. Chlorpyrifos gave the greatest profit when applied to grass receiving 80 kg nitrogen/ha and least profit where no nitrogen was used. This suggests that the benefits of an insecticide treatment depend on the ability of a sward to respond when leatherjackets are killed. This in turn depends on the type of pasture and fertilizer applications. These factors should be taken into account when determining the threshold leatherjacket population for insecticide treatment of different pastures."
