Abstract/Contents:"A single application of mefluidide to B. sterilis did not prevent flowering, but did significantly reduce tiller and panicle numbers per plant. However, plants with three or more tillers sprayed at 0.8 kg/ha produced greater numbers of panicles than no treatment. A rate of 0.2 or 0.4 kg/ha only gave a temporary reduction in vigour. Mefluidide did not affect seed viability. In general, the more panicles per plant, the lower the number of spikelets per panicle. Only the early treatments reduced the estimated seed return. Most germination of B. sterilis occurs by September, but some late-emerging seedlings will originate from seed persisting through winter on old plants (5). Thus, two applications might be required in the field. Any plants having three tillers or more at treatent would be unaffected or stimulated to produce greater numbers of seed. This technique, therefore, seems unlikely to be of value for managing B. sterilis in field margins."
