Abstract/Contents:Discusses the idea that there is no one ideal soil. Recommends "that full-scale soil tests, including assessment of soil nitrogen and soil EC levels be conducted at least twice a year". States that "only a fraction of each nutrient present in the soil is truly available to the plant" and describes how soil labs take an accurate measurement of the amount of nutrients in the soil. Discusses the monitoring of soluble soil salts and water-based extractions and describes what to do in the event a lab does not use saturated paste extraction (SPE). Provides alternate methods including dilute water extract procedures to quantify soluble salts. Explains how to read a typical soil test and lists the sufficiency ranges used to interpret the data. Provides equations for correcting deficits.
