Abstract/Contents:A turfgrass sward may contain 100 - 1,000 tillers per square decimeter. The tiller number determines many properties of the sward. Tiller formation must compensate tiller death if the sward is to persist. Tillers can be classified approximately into four types: unelongated vegetative shoots, elongated vegetative shoots (stolons and rhizomes), elongated reproductive shoots (flowering culms) and intermediate types (fully or partly elongated vegetative shoots). One special point is that there is no agreement at all in the literature on how to describe partly elongated sterile shoots of Lolium perenne. Unelongated vegetative shoots are of vital importance for sward quality. Reproductive shoots are merely troublesome, and so are the intermediate types. Turfgrass cultural practices and utilizaiton affect tiller formation. Many species are susceptible to wear, while in others the tiller number is increased by wear. Top dressing sometimes has a favorable effect. Fertilizer requirement depends on grass species, soil fertility and management system. Nitrogen fertilizer is, amongst other things, essential to the formation of unelongated vegetative tillers. The effect on rhizomes and stolons is not quite clear. Mowing has a very distinct effect on tiller number. The explanation lies in the promotion of tillering by increasing light intensity. On the other hand, very close mowing reduces tiller formation through lack of assimilates, and is also injurious to the growth of roots and rhizomes.
