Abstract/Contents:Describes turf evaluation trials conducted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station to obtain "information on the strengths and weaknesses of these new cultivars, their area of usefulness, where they should and should not be used and their management requirements." Describes the trials, noting that additional nitrogen was applied to at least the front half of each plot during late fall and early winter when conditions favored development of the winter brown blight disease (Helminthosporium siccans) and also during hot, humid periods favoring large brown patch (Rhizoctonia solani). States that lower nitrogen levels were used during damp, cloudy, spring weather favorable to red thread (Corticium fuciforme), during late summer conditions favoring dollar spot (Sclerotinia homoeocarpa) and during early fall when crown rust (Puccinia coronata) was present. Reports turf performance scores that reflect overall turf quality including general appearance, density mowing quality, and freedom from disease. Results indicate that the newer turf type cultivars performed well in all tests, but notes that all ryegrass varieties were killed or damaged when subjected to severe ice sheet conditions. States that none of the ryegrasses presently available have the dependable winter performance of the better Kentucky bluegrasses. Also presents Ryegrasses that exhibit the best summer performance.
