Abstract/Contents: | Introduces the three most important mineral elements essential for plant growth: nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). The low P content in turf plants compared to N and K should not diminish its role in healthy turf growth and development. Phosphorus is an essential plant nutrient because it is a key component of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), an energy-rich organic compound produced during the light reaction of photosynthesis. Phosphorus from turf fertilizer is being criticized for accelerated eutrophication of surface water. Several communities have regulated the sale and use of fertilizers containing P. Eliminating unnecessary P from turf programs will benefit the environment and the operating budget. Nutrient levels should be monitored consistently throughout the course to prepare for future regulations. |
