Abstract/Contents: | Discusses North Carolina State University's success obtaining funding to develop the Center for Turfgrass Environmental Research and Education, "an administrative arrangement for how to organize research and education activities by a broad interdisciplinary group of faculty, and to solicity and dispense new funding." States that North Carolina state legislatures eliminated a tax exemption on turfgrass fertilizers to generate $6 to 7 million annually in revenue and turf industry lobbyists were able to earmark $600,000 each year "to support turfgrass research and extension programs through the Center for Turfgrass Environmental Research and Education." Concludes that the success of this approach was a result of "close collaboration with the turfgrass industry, state and federal governments, and a long-term effort to document the size and economic value of the turfgrass industry." |
