| Abstract/Contents: | "A study of the Society of St. Andrews Golfers and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews minutes, burgh newspapers, burgh council minutes, and other records from 1650 to 1950 provides documented history concerning the initial use and evolution of turfgrass cultural practices and specialized equipment on a golf course. This started with hole making, sweeping and grazing, and evolved through sand patching, rolling, riddling, graiping, manuring, composting, and regular mowing. The roles of cunnigers, sheep, horses, and worms, are addressed. Mechanical approaches included carters, bowsers, and water schemes." |
