Abstract/Contents:States that the goal of the study "was to evaluate the possibility of modifying indices calculation depending on maintenance level [to verify] how different turfgrass choice could be for low and high input maintenance." States that in 2003, The Group for Testing & Control of Varieties and Seeds (GEVES) calculated three utlization indices (sport, lawn, and ornamental), weighted by means of the most important turfgrass characteristics depending on the conditions of use. States that "indices were calculated from a five-year test of 110 cool-season turfgrass varieties conducted in central Italy" using visual evaluations for turf quality and uniformity, weed and ground cover, shoot density, leaf texture, and thatch and that "indices were calculated for high and low input turf taking [into] account for low input weed and thatch depth due to their influence on maintenance level." Concludes that "the differences among the species emerged during the variety test. In conditions similar to the trial, red fescue appeared not appropriate for low input turfs, as herbicides are necessary to maintain good turf quality. On the contrary tall fescue had good low input indices."
