Abstract/Contents:Discusses a study conducted "to determine whether flat or jump racing resulted in a greater incidence of compaction of the soil" at eight racecourses: (Catterick (C), Newton Abbot (NA), Lingfield Park (LP), Newcastle (N), Leicester (L), Musselburgh (M), Sandown Park (SP), and Uttoxeter (U)) in the United Kingdom. States that "bulk density measurements were carried out using undisturbed soil samples." Results include "all bulk density (Db) values were lower than expected, and this was due to the samples being taken from the top 30mm of the soil profile, where there was a high proportion of organic matter from grass plant stems and roots. However, all racecourses, except NA, had significantly different mean Db values between either their flat and chase courses (L, SP, LP, M and N), their flat and hurdle courses (C), or their hurdle and chase courses (U)."
