Abstract/Contents:"Traffic tolerant grass systems are needed, if natural grass athletic fields are to remain competitive with synthetic turf, especially since the development of new rubber-infill synthetic turf systems. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the traffic stress tolerance of cool-season grasses when mature species are provided with seed in the presence of traffic, and to rank the relative traffic stress tolerance of cool-season grasses. The species were initially seeded in Sep 2000 at the Horticulture Research Station in Ames, IA. All species were reseeded 5 times from 20 Apr to 15 Jun 2001 to simulate a "cleating-in" strategy used by many sports turfgrass managers. The species evaluated in this study were 'Unique' Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), 'Catalina' perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) 'Millennium' tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.), 'Cindy' strong creeping red fescue (Festuca rubra L. spp. rubra Gaud.), 'Pencross' creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.), and 'Supra' supina bluegrass (Poa supina Schrad.) Treatments consisted of 6 species and 2 levels of traffic simulation. Traffic stress was applied with a Georgia - Soil Compaction Water (GA-SCW) cleated traffic simulator. Turfgrass quality, turfgrass cover, invader species, and exposed soil were visually estimated to assess traffic tolerance. The relative traffic tolerance ranking of six cool-season grass systems was: Kentucky bluegrass = perennial ryegrass > tall fescue = supina bluegrass > creeping bentgrass > fine fescue. This ranking did not agree with other researchers that evaluated traffic tolerance based only on a mature species. The practice of "cleating-in" seed may have been responsible for improving the traffic tolerance rank of Kentucky bluegrass and Creeping bentgrass. Turfgrass quality differences among species were more obvious during the first year and turfgrass cover differences were more obvious in the second year after the cumulative effects of traffic injury had thinned the canopy and exposed the soil. More research into the traffic tolerance of seedling turfgrass needs to be conducted to determine the relative rank of species performance in a realistic grassing system that includes mature species, traffic, continual over seeding, and recovery."
