Abstract/Contents:"Hybrid athletic field systems claim to combine the playability of natural grass with the durability of synthetic turf. Sportgrass is a hybrid reinforcement system containing a sand-filled synthetic matrix in which natural grass is grown. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of conventional turfgrass management practices on a hybrid system containing natural and synthetic (NS) components. A second objective was to compare a non-reinforced turfgrass surface with a hybrid system. A study are was established at the Iowa State University Horticulture Research Station, Ames, Iowa in 1996 using 'Limousine' Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.). Simulated wear treatments were conducted during the spring and autumn playing seasons, and turf was allowed to recover during the summer and winter. Prior to treatment, surface hardness of NS was harder (73 Gmax) than non-reinforced seeded or seeded plots (57 and 52 Gmax). This trend continued throughout the study. Vertical mowing of NS increased hardness by 13 to 18 Gmax. Solid tine aerification reduced NS hardness by 16-24 Gmax. The NS improved turf cover, turf quality, traction, and saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat), but reduced dry root mass compared with a non-reinforced conventional grass system."
