Abstract/Contents:"Bentgrass (Agrostis spp.) is typically seeded late summer through early fall; however, this timing can present competition from emerging annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.). Field studies were conducted to identify the timing for seeding that optimizes establishment of bentgrass as well as the potential difference among cultivars to establish on soil containing annual bluegrass seed. A split-plot factorial arrangement of seeding date (main plot) and cultivar (subplot) main effects was used in studies seeded in 1998 and 1999 on sandy loam (fine-loamy, mixed, mesic Typic Hapludults), which had an established seed bank of annual bluegrass. Seeding tool place in June, August, September, and October; the bentgrass cultivars were four A. stolonifera L. ('Penn A-4', 'L-93', 'Providence', and 'Pencross') and one A. canina L. ('SR 7200'). An unseeded control was included as a sixth subplot to assess the relative rate of annual bluegrass establishment. Bentgrass seeding in June and August established turf more rapidly than turf established from existing annual bluegrass seed in the soil. Conversely, turf establishment rate on plots seeded in September and October was similar to the unseeded plots. Thus, competition from annual bluegrass during the establishment of bentgrass will be reduced when seeding is performed early-to-mid summer when higher soil temperature is expected to suppress germination of annual bluegrass. Penn A-4 consistently developed high bentgrass populations and Penncross consistently produced low bentgrass populations regardless of seeding date, whereas the bentgrass populations of other cultivars were more dependent on seeding date, particularly SR 7200."
