Abstract/Contents:"In Korea, lawns and sports turfs are mainly established with zoysiagrass. In present study alternative species were evaluated on their performance in sod production stage and adaptability under different soil systems after sod transplanting. Turfgrass entries were three blends from Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) and three mixtures. Perennial ryegrass scored best in fast establishment vigor, sod rooting potential, development of rooting system, and green color duration, but had a poor turf performance. Kentucky bluegrass had slow early establishment and vigor and was shallow in rooting system, but had excellent turfgrass quality and satisfactory performance throughout the season. Tall fescue showed intermediate performance between Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass, but compared to the other species it had the shortest duration in green color. In mixtures, generally, the higher the perennial ryegrass was in content, the greater establishment vigor, sod rooting potential, development of rooting system, and green color duration, but the less the turf performance. Multi-layer and USGA systems were considered as the suitable ones for overall turf performance. Any turfgrass grown under mono-layer system showed poor quality and short duration of green color and produced less root growth. Kentucky bluegrass blend or Kentucky bluegrass-based mixture under a sand-based soil system with rootzone, intermediate and drainage layers is the most adequate for high quality sports turf in Korea."
