Abstract/Contents:"A study to evaluate the performance of 46 different cultivars of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) under conditions simulating a first class cricket square was established in Semptember 1995. For comparative purposes, four other grass types (Agrostis capillaris L., Festuca rubra L. ssp. commutata Gaud., F. rubra spp. litoralis (G.P.W. Meyer) Auquier and Poa pratensis L.) and six grass mixtures were also included. The main aim of the investigation was to establish if choice of grass could affect the performance of first class cricket squares. To do this, the trial was prepared for simulated cicket play four times, twice each during the summers of 1997 and 1998. At these times, measurementst of surface properties were made (hardness, ball rebound, cracking and greenness). Significant variation among cultivars of perennial ryegrass were found for all assessments made. There were also significant correlations over time for each assessment and among the different assessments. It is concluded that choice of grass could have marked effects on surface properties and playing quality of cricket wickets. It is suggested thet performance ratings could be drawn up for cultivars of perennial ryegrass and that such ratings would be of value to help produce high quality playing surfaces for cricket."
