Abstract/Contents:"New Zealand turf breeding has provided the industry with a series of turf cultivars adapted to the unique conditions of climate, pests and turf use which prevail. Turf type ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) cultivars containing endophyte are widely used for sportsfields with 7 locally bred cultivars available. Browntop (Agrostis capillaris L.) is used widely in fine turf and 3 locally bred cultivars are available. Red fescues (Festuca rubra L.) are largely imported and seed production in New Zealand will require the breeding of cultivars with greater yield potential than those currently available. New Zealand breeders were the first to develop rhizomatous cultivars of turf tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) but despite this the species is used only to a limited extent in New Zealand although seed is grown for export. There still remains considerable potential to improve turf cultivars in New Zealand provided the small industry can sustain breeding programs."
