Abstract/Contents:"Growth and morphological characteristics of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) cultivars vary greatly. This study was conducted to determine if these differences affect golf ball position within the turf canopy when Kentucky bluegrass cultivars are managed as golf course fairways. Twenty-five Kentucky bluegrass cultivars were planted in 1995 in Urbana, IL, USA, and West Lafayette, IN, USA, and maintained at 1.9-2.2 cm to simulate golf course fairway height of cut. Plugs of each cultivar were collected in 1999 and several morphological characteristics were evaluated. Mean counts ranged from a low of 1.5 tillers cm-2 for 'SR 2000' in Urbana to a high of 6.4 tillers cm-2 for 'Limousine' in West Lafayette. Mean leaf angles ranged from an open width of 83.6° for 'Wildwood' in West Lafayette, to a narrow width of 35.7° for 'Allure' in Urbana. Mean thatch depth ranged from a low of 6.4 mm for 'Glade' in West Lafayette, to a high of 14.7 mm for 'North Star' in Urbana. Golf ball lie measurements were conducted with modified digital calipers to determine the amount of golf ball exposed above the turf canopy. Ball lie means ranged from 25.37 mm for 'Wildwood' in Urbana to 31.82 mm for 'Rambo' in West Lafayette. Correlation analyses were conducted to identify the relationship between individual morphological characteristics and ball lie. The most consistent relationship was between numbers of tillers and ball lie where R was 0.482 in West Lafayette and 0.501 in Urbana."
