Abstract/Contents:"Turfgrass extension specialists employ a variety of methods to share research-derived information to clients. Since 1994, clients in the Chicago (IL, USA) area have received instruction at the Indiana-Illinois Turfgrass Short Course where university faculty teach 13 classes over a four- or five- day period. This cooperative activity utilizes instructors from Purdue University and the University of Illinois turf faculty and has the Midwest Regional Turf Foundation and the Illinois Turfgrass Foundation as event co-sponsers. Students receive basic turf training in an intensive, but efficeint manner that upgrades the skill levels of workers for the local turf industries. Benefits to the Purdue and Illinois turfgrass extension programs include income production, shared teaching and administration, clients of both states are served by a single activity, and positive public relations for the extension programs, as well as the Foundations. The program is successful: in 244 surveys from 1999-2004, students gave an overall rating of 4.64, where 5 = very helpful and 1 = little help. In the same surveys, 99.2% of responding students felt better equipped to do their jobs more effectively and efficiently and 91.6% felt capable of managing turf in a more environmentally conscious manner after the Short Course. Finally, in 2004, there was a 29.5% increase in competency measured by pre- and post- instruction student testing."
